Rod Menzies
I started surfing in 1961, on a 10' 6'' hollow ply board, that took my old mate Billy Hooke and me to carry to the water. It gave me a taste of catching waves, that started me on my lifelong pusuit of the "Crystal Cylinder"!
I then graduated to my first poly board, a 9' Jackson and Cansdell. Over the following 12 yrs, I followed the progression of surfing thru the long board and into the short board era.
I pulled back on surfing for a few years through the 70s, as child rearing duties, and following a career in music, took precedence.
In 1984 I went on a trip with my young family around Australia, loaded up with all the toys, sail board, surf ski, short board and an old '62 "RON" mal, and ended up surfing the old mal most of the time, at Greenmount Point, and found to my delight that I surfed it better than I ever did in the old days! Hence the reindroduction to "Malibu surfing".
Since that time, I have surfed many different sized and shaped mals, from many different manufacturers. I figure over the years, I have had about 40 odd different boards, of which I have broken 14. I now surf exclusively Jimmy Parko's Jackson mals. I feel his 9' x 22"3/8" x 2"3/4" "ZX2" for me, is the best all round Mal that I have surfed.
I have travelled to quite a few different locations both here and abroad to surf, such as England, Ireland, Wales, Hawaii, Maldives, Bali, Qlnd, S.A., W.A., N.T and Vic.
Since getting back into surfing in the early 80's, I have competed quite extensively, having achieved many wins in my age divisions, such as "Noosa Festival Of Surfing,Byron Bay Anzac Classic, Laybacks Classic, Mollymook Charity Classic,Dv8's Banana,Gold Coast Mal Function,Hogs Breath Legends Tour,as well as our own Southside Spring Festival Classic, and the Tradies Surf Masters! I have also placed well in many other contests, including the State Titles, a 2nd and two 3rds, and the Aussie titles 4th place. Southside Spring Classic 3rd 2012.
Well done Rod - 1st Over 60's Shortboard and 2nd Over 60's Longboard fantastic results
